10 Pro TV Mounting Hacks from the Experts

Make every TV install smoother, safer, and smarter with tips direct from the pros.

Whether you’re a seasoned installer or setting up your first TV mount, a few simple habits can save time, protect your equipment, and give every project a polished, professional finish. Here are 10 top AV installation hacks that make all the difference.

1. Choose the Right Mount

A smooth install starts long before the drill comes out, with choosing the right wall mount for your TV and room.

Match your mount to your TV size and VESA pattern (check your manual or the back of your TV), and think about where it’ll be positioned. For screens at eye level in front of your main seating area, a Flat or Fixed mount works perfectly.

If there’s a window or light source nearby, a Tilting mount helps reduce glare and reflections. For open-plan spaces or corner installations, a Multi Position (Full Motion) mount gives the freedom to adjust your viewing angle.

Also consider your wall type (stud walls, brick, or dot-and-dab). Dual-stud mounts offer more flexibility of screen positioning on stud walls, while AVF Any Wall Mounts are designed to work on any wall type, giving both first time installers and pro’s total confidence on site.

2. Read Before You Reach for Tools

Before you start, take five minutes to read the instruction manual, even if you’ve fitted dozens of mounts before. It will help you understand the process, confirm you’ve got all the required tools and fixings to hand, and can prevent mistakes that cost time later.

3. Check the TV First

Always attach the VESA plates to the TV before drilling the wall.
This will ensure your chosen mount fits your screen perfectly and will avoid discovering a mismatch after you’ve drilled your holes.

4. Protect Your Screen

When attaching brackets, lay your TV face-down on a soft surface. A rug, blanket, or duvet will protect the screen from accidental scratches and pressure marks.

5. Know Your Wall Before You Drill

Use a stud finder to identify wall type and stud position.
Different materials such as plasterboard, brick, concrete, and dot & dab all need specific fixings (included with AVF mounts). Knowing your wall will save time and ensure a solid install.

6. Find Your Perfect Screen Height

For the best viewing experience, aim for the centre of the screen to sit roughly at seated eye level, this is usually around 105–110 cm from the floor.

7. Mark Twice, Drill Once

Always test-fit the bracket position with a pencil before drilling. A small pilot hole helps confirm wall type and alignment before committing to the final holes.

8. Level Like a Pro

Don’t rely on your eye alone. Use a small spirit level or the built-in levelling feature on many AVF mounts to fine-tune your TV’s position after installation.

9. Plan For Cables Early

Before drilling or mounting, decide how your cables will be managed. Through-wall, trunking, or simply hidden behind furniture and remember to leave enough slack for Multi Position mounts to extend and swivel freely.

10. Team Up for Safety

Even lightweight TVs can be awkward to lift. We suggest you always fit screens above 47” with two people. One to guide the mount, one to steady the screen. Safety first, every time.

Whether it’s your first install or your hundredth, these small habits could make a big difference.
